EXISTING FINALSCRATCH DJs

A Note to Our Loyal FinalScratch DJs

As we progress into the new year 2007, Stanton would like to address our FinalScratch loyals, and give you a little insight as to where we're headed. Led by our original launch of the FinalScratch technology, the world of digital DJing has grown and developed immensely over recent years, and Stanton remains highly committed to this movement. Our strategy is and has always been to stay focused on releasing only the most innovative digital solutions, based on emerging technologies, and on what makes sense through the eyes of the DJ.

We will continue to support our loyal users, and over the coming year you will see a digital product strategy unfold from Stanton that gives you the tools you need to reach performance abilities you never thought possible as a DJ, allowing you to take full advantage of the digital DJ technology that we pioneered with FinalScratch.

FinalScratch OPEN

The first step in our strategy is to introduce you to FinalScratch OPEN. Today, there are a number of feature-filled DJ softwares available that offer many ways to build your performance. We think one of the greatest advantages we offer you with FinalScratch OPEN is the freedom to choose the ones that benefit you most. The most important thing to know here is that you don't need to buy any hardware - you already have it. Your Stanton ScratchAmp is a state- of-the-art low latency FireWire 96k / 24 bit audio interface that is compatible for use with a variety of software applications, making it an ideal solution for programs that do not currently ship with a sound card, such as MixVibes, Deckadance, Ableton Live, Traktor DJ Studio, PCDJ, and the like, and providing the connections needed from turntables, cd players, and microphones.

Because the ScratchAmp is an ASIO/WDM device on Windows and is a class compliant CoreAudio device on the MacOS, it can work with virtually every audio application on the planet. The Asio and CoreAudio compatibility ensure that pro-audio applications such as Cubase, Project 5, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reason, and others will run flawlessly with the sound card.

FSdk

Stanton has now opened the Final Scratch format, allowing all software companies, big and small, to take advantage of time code support. We believe that by providing this technology free of charge to developers, as well as linking its use with the ScratchAmp, FinalScratch users will now enjoy an unbelievable new realm of possibility. FinalScratch OPEN now has the potential to become a cross software standard for vinyl control.

With FinalScratch OPEN, we are now shipping the world-class Stanton ScratchAmp as a standalone piece at an incredible value, and working with software developers to offer DJs the opportunity to choose the option that?s best for them. As an existing ScratchAmp owner, you can enjoy this benefit immediately! Stay tuned for the next steps...

REVIEWS

"I'm just getting into FinalScratch. I haven't done a performance with it yet, but I've been using it at my house and it's really amazing stuff."
- Interview with DJ Kaskade, URB Magazine

by DJ Times Magazine

Digital Delights:
By David Cross & Robert LaFrance

Stanton FinalScratch

Maybe I am prejudiced, but I love vinyl. I learned on it. I've used it for years. I even eat off it if all my plates are dirty. So, as the percentage of CDs that I play crept to over 50-percent, I started to wonder if I was losing a key aspect of DJing?performance. Sure, I can beatmatch and execute most of the same functions (maybe more) with CD. But it's just not as cool when the crowd looks up at the booth and sees me waive a small silver disc in the air, as opposed to back-spinning a vinyl record with all my might.

So how can a DJ keep the feel and performance of vinyl and still take advantage of the convenience of the digital domain? The answer is turntable-controlled DJ software, i.e.?use vinyl on standard turntables to control a DJ application playing digital audio files. Stanton (stantondj.com) and Native Instruments (native-instruments.com), the originators of the technology, have teamed up to provide another installment of their flagship product?FinalScratch 2 powered by Traktor. Let's see if it lives up to the hype.

Initial Reactions: As I removed the shipping box from my stoop, I was surprised by the small footprint, but considerable weight. Opening the box revealed a break-out-box-sized, silver computer interface that Stanton calls a ScratchAmp. The ScratchAmp is decidedly road-worthy with its metal casing and large rubber corner guards. The package is also consists of an untold number of cables, an installation CD, the timecoded vinyl records, and also timecoded CDs which enable you to use any DJ-oriented CD player to control your digital audio files as well. Sweet! The Traktor software installation was straightforward even with the licensing authorization procedure that requires a system ID and access to email.

As I glanced at the sheer number of hardware components, my natural fear of the unknown consumed me and I quickly grabbed the operation manual. (Unfortunately for me, this product has a learning curve.) Even with assistance from the manual, connecting the turntables to the ScratchAmp and the ScratchAmp to the computer while achieving quick response and quality sound without distortion was for me a feat.

FinalScratch works by connecting the phono output of your turntables to the ScratchAmp and the output of the unit to line inputs on your DJ mixer. The special records contain an analog audio signal that tells the software the exact time at which to play the digital audio file. Additionally, you can connect the "Thru" outputs on the ScratchAmp to your DJ mixer's phono inputs in order to maintain the ability to play normal audio vinyl (not timecoded). A bit complicated, but once I understood the concepts, it became intuitive.

So, after some reading and trial-and-error, I was able to get the timecoded records to control the sample audio files that come with FinalScratch. Tip for the newbies: Although FinalScratch offers compatibility and playlist synchronization with iTunes, make sure to unplug all other FireWire devices that are using the same card in the computer. The Traktor software could not read the timecoded records while my iPod was plugged in. It would also help the troubleshooting process if the ScratchAmp contained any kind of power indicator/LED.

Calibration: Once all the hardware components are installed, it's time to calibrate the hardware to ensure the timecode on the records is clear enough for the software to read. In my case, a simple turn of the gain knob on the ScratchAmp was all that was needed. But, there are also settings for rumble (in case you are playing in a club environment with significant bass) and sensitivity or "response," which can be adjusted to accommodate more heavy-handed DJs or even turntablists. After calibration, I was sure ready to hear some music.

Search and Display:
The Traktor software offers the DJ a number of powerful search features for locating digital files on your hard drive or importing them from an audio CD. The left-hand window acts as Explorer does for Windows. Navigate to a folder on your C: drive that contains the files you want to play. The songs then appear in the playlist.

Certainly one of the main advantages of the FinalScratch system over traditional vinyl is the ability to locate any song in your collection via a simple text search. Type in a portion of the song title, artist, label, or user defined keyword, hit enter and up pops a list of songs that match?instantly. I imported about 800 songs into Traktor and the search response was still immediate. You can then sort the songs in your list by clicking on one of the fore mentioned titles in the header. Try that with traditional vinyl!

You can also organize your songs into virtual record "cases." Drag all your disco into one case, house into another and hip hop in a third. The cases correspond to the function keys on your keyboard for easy accessibility.

Once you've found that odd request, simply drag it from the playlist window onto either Deck A or B. Traktor visually displays the waveform on that deck with supporting information like title, artist, and BPM from the playlist entry. Time-elapsed and time-remaining are also visible here. A yellow bar indicates the position of the needle. Now, press Start on the turntable and you should be grooving. Vertical guides on the waveform display appear every minute and correspond to visual rings in the FinalScratch vinyl. You always know where you are in the track. Next, load up another song on Deck B and beatmatch with your turntable's pitch control, and your DJ mixer's faders, just like vinyl. In fact, it's easy to forget you are using FinalScratch at all after a few mixes. There is no perceivable latency or pitch drift even when beatmatching for minutes on end.

Sound Quality: Since it's so easy to forget that you are actually listening to digital audio, I bet you are wondering if it sounded as good as the old black circle. Naysayers take note?my answer is a resounding yes. Assuming you are using WAV files or high-quality MP3s (192K coding or above), there was no noticeable difference between FinalScratch and vinyl. Even pitched up or down to 8 with key lock engaged, the sound is warm and full. Scratching and cueing displayed no harsh digital artifacts except when powering off the turntable just as it came to a stop. Top quality.

Better than vinyl? While I'm not quite ready to put my traditional records in permanent storage, FinalScratch does offer some other interesting enhancements over vinyl. The first is an Anti-Skipping mode. This mode forces Traktor to only consider the speed and direction of the record and not follow the embedded timecode. This effectively makes the records skip-proof and allows for completely flawless scratching. In my tests, I could not make the record skip without dropping the turntable out the window.

Another exceptional feature is FinalScratch's auxiliary input. Since the ScratchAmp is essentially a modified computer sound card, the AUX inputs allows you to record your entire DJ mix direct to disk. Simply connect a second output from your DJ mixer to the AUX input and press Record. You can also connect a microphone to this input, record your voice and then immediately load it on one of the decks for vinyl-style manipulation.

Conclusion: All-in-all, FinalSctach 2 powered by Traktor lives up the hype. Excellent sound quality, DJ-friendly software design and powerful features command your attention. If you are looking for a portable, digital solution with the familiarity of vinyl, you should take a hard look at FinalScratch. Especially if you are a mobile DJ forced to carry (and then find) untold hundreds or thousands of songs to accommodate even the most obscure requests. I would like to see Native Instruments enhance the software platform to include some standard effects like delay and flange. Also, an automatic BPM counter could enable loops and effects to automatically sync to the beat without having to manually beatmatch them. But, in the end, FinalScratch is an excellent way to ensure you do not lose any of the performance aspects of the art of DJing while still progressing into the convenience and feature enhancements of the digital world.

The SA.5 is the first professional battle mixer which does not have a single rotary knob. Using all faders gives turntablists controls with which they are familiar and comfortable using. The positioning of all sliders and switches has been taken into special consideration for a clean, simple and easy to understand layout that is not over-crowded or confusing. Stanton's Engineering team has taken great care in designing a mixer that will sound great whether being used on stage at battles or in the studio. It is guaranteed to be the mixer that future world champions are made on.
