Getting some positive feedback on Bangkokrecorder forum :)

This week we had four new releases for your listening pleasure.

Cyndi Seui - Micro bitz life
DJ Spydamonkee - Tha attack of Solar Flair
DJ Dragon - My Soul Session
Goose - 20 guns pointing in your face

Cyndi Seui is a cute exploration of synth and the old casio style with a mildly unique flavor. Quirky is a god description and it comes with some pretty cool software for your PC. We played about half the CD while testing it out.
Gave the Spydamonke Selection a chance but have to say I was slightly dissapointed at the lack of Thai hiphop. I understand that he is supplying to an audience who wants to hear the latest grooves so maybe it's a case of not enough support from the locals to justify putting more local work on a mix?

The highlight track of the night was definitely Goose - Track 6. A very well executed electro piece composed with live drum sampling and guitar fx. There were a couple of other good tracks in a vein similar to Radiohead. I imagine this would be a pretty good band to catch live.

After a foray into sweet sounds of the female genre vocal range, we ended the night with the newest release from DJ Dragon. DnB heads should look out for this release when it arrives in stores. "My Soul Session" is a very well crafted mix of the latest cutting edge tracks that Dragon has in his selection. It will be a great mix for driving or for getting in tha mood to do your thang. Soulfull and classy. Highly reccomended.

Starting from the 1 December we will have cheap Italian Champagne Noir from 5 - 10........

Thanks to those who came out this week.

We had lots of new music and two guest DJs Aung and Oum as well as a surprise appearance from Ronny of Bangkokspin.com who shared a few of his favorite house and electro tracks.

Local cuts this week:

Apartment Khunpa
Montoon Jira
Acid Lily
Flux
Microgen

Our pick of the night has to be Montoon Jira - Track 2. This three track CD was released at Fat Fest 5. Superb execution and definite style. Leaves you feeling good after listening. I will be playing this one for the next few months no doubt.

Acid Lily Track 5 is the best of that album in our opinion. It is the Thai version of the title track.

Apartment Khunpa track 2 is an exploration of Techy Drum n Bass. Pretty cool and sure to get your heart beat moving faster.

We also showcased tracks from local Farang producers Flux and Microgen. We stand committed to play anything that is made by a local producer at least once. These guys set the bar pretty high.

This week we want to invite you to the pre Carl Cox drinks session with a guest appearance from Microgen playing a live tech set with real electronic instruments at 10pm. No Laptops for this artist. Bring on the 303!

Had a nice little warm up party for pre Carl Cox peeps.

This week we also had a guest appearance from Microgen. He played a smooth set of spacious Techno with his Roland hardware sampler and vst plugins. Watch for future events with this locally based producer.

Our new cuts this week were:

Stylish Nonsense - Use your professor
Midnight Krisis All Starz - Cinderella
Fonik

My pick was the Drum n Bass version of Cinderella. A stylishly slick and pounding Drum n Bass cut. This one will be on priority rotation for the next few months.

Stylish Nonsense is also a (surprise) stylishly slick Electronica offering based around the Casio soundscape with serious attention paid to the overall feeling and ambience created by music. I will also be making sure to explore this album in its entirety.

Fonik is a locally based producer working in the Tech realm with a slight lean towards Drum n bass. He threads organic texture throughout his compositions. He promises me more tunes for the next few weeks so the best of his work is yet to come. I've already heard some of his unfinished songs and assure you they are worth more credit than he gives them himself.

For the next event we will have a guest set from DJ Cello. A locally based Italian House DJ/Producer who has even got a few white label credits of his own back in Italy. This guy knows his House so you can expect a sweet set pre "Deep Dish" to warm the loins and get the heart pumping....

Special thanks to Cello for gracing the decks and providing a soulful set of the most up to date House releases with a few old school classics melded into the mix for the fun of it.

This weeks cuts:

Futon - Rich Baby
Respect - Zona
So:on - Ghosted Note
mix Cd from Cello DJ

Some might say it's about time I reviewed a Futon cut. This Single was released for Fat Fest. If you know the sound you have already got your opinion but for those who don't I'll attempt to make a fair critique. The overall technical execution is obviously flawless however the sound is predictably electroclashy and I found it slightly outdated. I won't make any judgements about why but I will comment that they are extremely popular in Thailand. They have created a very danceable remix which I'm sure pumps the crowd when they play it live. That track is number 4 - the remix of "That look in your eyes".

Respect by Zona is a refreshing Hip Hop excursion by a Thai artist. The soundscapes are not too difficult but they are also pushing boundaries in a continent dominated by male hip hop artists. Zona has something to say and she says it with style. I give her Respect for putting her self on the line and coming up with music that she believes in. I have a sneaking suspicion that a couple of the songs will be favorites for pre party makeup sessions. It's not Gwen but it's more real because of it.

So:on gets the track of the night. Number three by Criquetpar - "Winter Wanderer". A cinematic excursion into bits and bleeps that surparses any of the tracks reviewed so far except Montoon Jira. I was told Criquetpar is based in Japan. It has surely helped him to move far away from an average commercial sound. Track 4 is also worth a repeat listen and you can be sure I will be playing them both again.

Next Thurs day is the 22 Dec. Stay tuned for who will guest that night...

This week we had a write up in the latest BK Magazine. Pretty good for us but it seems that at this time of year not many people follow the goings on in BK mag. Got a few new faces through the door though.

This weeks cuts:

Kai-Jo Brothers - Took Took Breakdown
Kai-Jo Brothers - Pre release new album

Took Took Breakdown has been out for a few months which is why we haven't reviewed it yet but as it was a gift from Jo himself it found its way to the decks on Thursday night. The track of the album is definitely track 2. The title track remixed by Ga and Pi of T-Bone fame. They prove their indepth understanding of the Dub Genre by crafting a stripped down Dub version utilising many modern Dub techniques with a few old favorites added in for good measure.

I'm quite biased about the new album by the Kai-Jo Brothers. After all I have worked with them on occasion and I am a Dub musician myself. Anything locally produced that vaguely touches on roots/rock steady/ska/dub/dancehall is going to have more success with me. However, I am seriously enjoying the album and have found myself humming along to various songs over the past few months. My personal favorite is "Full Moon Party". Not because it is so way out there but because it precisely conjours up the feeling of being outdoors at the beach with ya freinds having a mellow time. The live set is also very uplifting. Be sure to catch these guys at Brick bar, Khaosan on Sunday nights or at their next Bangkok performance. They also tour so maybe you'll be lucky to just bump into one of their sets.

I now have over an hour of locally produced tracks that I consider worthy of being combined into a mix session. I'm still working on the overall flow of the mix though so come down between 8 and 10 and let me know your opinion of what tracks should go where. The track list is also by no mean finalised yet so if you have something that is soo fresh and I have missed it out you better let me know about it.

BTW it seems the bar staff at Zurich are serving B100 cocktails and beer all evening now.

More next week....
